Absence

The socks curl up and laugh like hyenas

on the classroom carpet. Oh he just won’t go,

I can’t get him to do it. Well, you can’t force them,

can you? The umbrellas chatter humpily along,

and toddlers charge at puddles. Careful,

she can’t go that fast! More marmite sandwiches.

Seagulls freckle the muddy field. How about a kiss?

I have to go, I have to get back for the plumbers,

they’re probably waiting outside. Convoys

of sleek people-movers snuffle at the gates. Oh god,

another reliever, he’s not going to like that.

The field rushes down to the water, where

thwarted boats slump in the estuary shallows.

Did she really say that? Look now,

the rain has stopped. Thin women march off

with children tightly strapped in buggies. Go on,

run now, you’re going to be late! Gum trees drip

on the timid, the blithe, the fierce goodbyes.
